In Peace

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.

—Psalm 4:8

She sleeps tranquilly on the leather chair
Soft light surrounds her
Eyes closed
Ears relaxed

With a steady calm
She takes a breath
Then, another

She is not fearful
Her heart is at peace

May I sleep in calmness as she does
Knowing my Father in Heaven
Watches over me

in peace

He Who Watches Over You

It’s late and I’m thinking of going to sleep soon.

In about seven hours it will be time to get out of bed and start a new day.

During those seven hours, my mind will be lost in dreams as I rest and recuperate.

While I am resting, God will be awake—all night.

He will not be sleeping or lost in dreams, unavailable to care for me.

With a continual, unending attention to all that He has created, God never slumbers.

He watches over me when I am awake AND when I am asleep.

My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

 He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
 indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

 The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
 the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

—Psalm 121:2-8
