Prayer

The garden area I saw was lush and inviting, with blooms of many colors.

An arch of vines formed a canopy over the brick walkway.

I am reminded of the lyrics of an old hymn:

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

–Philippians 4:6-7

Get Some Rest

On the way to the group meeting, I listened to the radio in the car.

It was a familiar drive to my friend’s home, so being in a sort of “auto pilot” mode, I caught glances of the early evening sky and sang along in my mind with the music.

After arriving at my destination, I enjoyed some finger foods and light conversation.

The next hours were composed of considering our individual hearts and what might be keeping us from living wholehearted lives.

Embedded in those hours was a thirty minute time frame of complete quiet and reflection before God.

As I considered what was coming to my mind, I wrote some thoughts on paper.

Thirty minutes went by at an incredibly quick pace.

Not only was I quiet, but I was basically still, as well, with only movements confined to the couch I was on.

Rest.
Reflection.

Quietness.

Stillness.

Honestly, that’s not a place I find myself in most of the time.

It is, however, a place that I think God would want me to occupy more often.

A time to hear His words.

A time to remove the rambling clutter of the daily routine to just…..listen.

Consider this passage:

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

–Mark 6:30-32

There are times when—-

We all need to rest.

We all need a quiet place.

We all need to come to Jesus by ourselves.
