To Work Together

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.

—Romans 8:28

Everything that we see around us that God has made—it’s a miracle, isn’t it?

A flower bud blooming out into mathematical perfection.

A misty sunrise over the mountains.

The birth of a baby.

These aren’t things we could do.

No–only God can do these things.

And God can cause everything to work together for the good of those who love Him.

That “working together” is miraculous, too.

It is only God that can do that for us.

According To His Purpose

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

–Romans 8:28

To know—to understand deep within my heart

In all things—the wonderful, beautiful, priceless moments and the crushing, heartbreaking, confusing ones

God works for the good—the good that only He can bring about, the good of His choosing

Those who love Him—those who have seen and felt His compassionate love and mercy and respond

Called–set apart, chosen

According to His purpose—His design

All praise belongs to Him!

Perfect Peace

While visiting the ocean recently, I photographed two pelicans.

Often seen silently gliding in the air above in group formation, they are sometimes seen just sitting in the water, floating.

As I watched them, large waves would come up.

At times, they were completely hidden from my view because of the raging water and its foam.

Seconds later, they would appear in view again, still calmly riding the waves as though nothing had happened.

I know, of course, that at any moment they could’ve decided to just take off and fly away.

For a very long time, though, they chose not to.

They remained anchored in the water, moving as it moved, back and forth, high and low.

I can imagine them saying, “Let’s just sit here in the water for awhile and rest.”

Rest?

Rest in the constant surge of water beneath them?

Rest in the ocean’s white foam?

Evidently so.

They seemed at peace as they trusted their Maker.

The Bible tells us in Isaiah 26:3-4 that God can give perfect peace to those who trust Him:

You, Lord, give perfect peace
to those who keep their purpose firm
and put their trust in You.
 Trust in the Lord forever;
    He will always protect us.

The waves in our lives can we great, yet God can give us peace…

even in their midst.

The Purpose of the Lord

It was a quiet morning, warm and inviting.

Stepping out onto the boardwalk at the park, the scenery was familiar.

How many times had I visited this place, looking out over the lake, taking in all the beauty of my surroundings?

Within the first moment of my arrival, I noticed a graceful, white heron posing effortlessly among the plants growing by the water’s edge.

I had often seen birds like this before, but today was different.

God had, in the past several days, been revealing a new direction for me.

There are times when God speaks to each of us to lead us to something new.

He may confirm in our hearts whom we should marry or what career to pursue.

He may reveal to us a new ministry opportunity or He may direct us to begin or end our involvement in a certain area.

Today was just like the other days I had visited the park—-except that it wasn’t.

God had been speaking to my heart about a specific direction for my life, and I was listening.

Proverbs 19:21 says,

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

The plans that are in my mind will ultimately be aligned with God’s purpose, if I am willing to listen and heed His voice.
