This Is The Way

When I take a step

My gaze often on the road before me

Am I listening?

Listening for God

Awaiting His guidance

Walking in obedience

Instead of my own wisdom

Are my ears hearing a word behind me

Softly

Firmly

Telling me the way

He Will Show You

I see the sunset as it meets the ocean

A seam of water and sky

Blended with blurred reflection

 

I hurry beside the fence

Intent on finding a clearer view

The blazing light before me

Fills my thoughts and fuels my steps

 

Drawn to what I see

The path is laid before me

The only direction I need

Life is in the Way

Life is in the way of those who are right with God, and in its path there is no death.

 –Proverbs 12:28

Because of Jesus.

Because of Jesus and what He did for me.

Because of Jesus and what He did for me by paying the penalty for my sins.

Because of Jesus, I am right with God.

What path is before me?

Everlasting life.

No death.

Because of Jesus.

A Broad Path

It’s a neighborhood I always like to visit.

About a twenty minute drive from where I live, there is a quiet little neighborhood with a walkway behind the homes.

Strolling along on this walkway, I enjoy seeing the flowers and landscaping in the backyards.

Visiting there recently,  I noticed that someone had constructed a boardwalk leading down to a lake.

That would make it a lot easier to traverse the path to the water.

Are there times that you’ve realized that God had made an easier pathway for you to travel on?

Above the grass, rocks and thick brush, you’ve been placed on a firm deck, protected from potential harm.

You provide a broad path for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

—2 Samuel 22:37

Commit Your Way

Psalm 37:3-5

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
 Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in Him, and He will act.

What can I do?

Trust.

Do good.

Dwell.

Befriend.

Delight.

Commit.

What will God do?

He will give.

He will act.

On this day that I call today, the future is unknown.

Unknown to me, yet known to God.

On this day that I call today, I must commit my way to Him.

And Narrow the Road

It was a new place for me.

I had never hiked there before.

A path was split, with a fence bordering only one.

Which was the best way to go?

Did each path lead to the same place or to quite different destinations?

Jesus said,

 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

—Matthew 7:13-14

The Path of Life Known

The traffic was called to stop as the guard arms came down into place by the railroad.

Red lights flashed.

In the near distance, I could hear the sound of a train whistle.

Seconds later, a train came, crossing in front of me.

Where was it going?

I will never know, but the conductor of the train knew just exactly where it was going.

He also knew that the train would get there on the rails.

Not on the paved highway where I was.

Not by traveling on vast fields.

Not on dirt roads.

It would get there on a train track that had been laid out to take them there.

That was really the only way possible.

If we want to live forever in Heaven, there is just one way.

Not on the paved highway of good works.

Not by traveling on vast fields of humanism.

Not on dirt roads of self-sufficiency.

We will have to go on a path that has been laid out to take us there.

This path can only be traveled by those whose passage has been secured by faith in Jesus.

Psalm 16:11 reads,

“You make the path of life known to me. Complete joy is in your presence. Pleasures are by your side forever.”

My Dark Path

I had never been down the road before.

A sign inviting travelers to venture on it’s path was intriguing enough.

Bending trees made a canopy over the packed sand, forming an inviting mix of sunlight and shadow.

Following each turn and curve, it finally led to the water’s edge where a clear, blue sky shown from above.

If I had decided to decline the sign’s silent invitation to explore, I would not have known the rustic beauty of the path that led to the sea.

I would have missed the canopy of branches arcing overhead.

 

God has surely invited me to travel many pathways in life that would have been both beneficial and beautiful for me.

I will not know of some of them, however, as I chose to decline His invitation.

Perhaps out of fear.

Lack of self-esteem.

Failure to trust Him.

Maybe because I wasn’t listening closely enough to even hear His call toward the pathway.

God is a God of second chances however, and there have been other roads that I have chosen to travel.

Having answered God’s voice at those times, I have experienced the joy of what He had for me along the journey.

Psalm 119:105 from THE MESSAGE reads,

“By Your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path.”

God will lead us along the paths He calls us to, even if they seem to be filled with shadows and uncertainty.
