Be On Guard

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

—1 Corinthians 16:13

The Eastern Bluebird stood on the apex of my neighbor’s roof.

Looking.

Being aware.

Sometimes we have to get to the very top of our circumstances–above them all–and look at things from an eternal perspective.

We have to be on guard, for temptations and difficulties surround us.

No matter what, we know we can stand firm in our faith.

God is in control.

Because He is and we are not, we can be courageous.

Our strength comes from Him.

It Determines the Course

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

—Proverbs 4:23

Fences.

They keep things in.

They keep things out.

They protect.

They guard.

At the very existence of a fence, it is reasonable to recognize that something or someone needed protection.

No one can really see a fence around our hearts.

It could be a harmful fence, keeping God out.

It could be a helpful fence, keeping sin and temptation at bay.

It could be a harmful fence, keeping sin and temptations close inside.

It could be a helpful fence, keeping God close inside.

As followers of Jesus, we need to guard our hearts from the lure and the harm of evil.

Our hearts will determine the course of our lives.

Why should we guard our hearts?

Proverbs 4:23 tells us why.

There are several translations of this verse, each giving us insight into the wisdom of this statement.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.

Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life.

Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the sources of life.

Keep your heart with all caution because from it is the outgoing of life.

Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.

If our hearts need guarding, it must be that there is something to protect them from.

If anything can draw our hearts and minds away from God in any measure, we must put up our guard against it.
