With Good

What do we do when bad things happen? It could be as simple as the washing machine breaking.

It might be as difficult as a loved one becoming ill.

It might be as devastating as a divorce.

It might be as confusing as an unforeseen job loss.

How do we respond?

Do we see the difficulty ahead of us and angrily run straight ahead to fight?

Although that might be the common and natural response, is it the best one?

Is it the response that God would be pleased with?

Romans 12:21 reads:

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

If we have a response of evil to battle evil—that is the opposite of choosing God to battle the evil for us.

If we can just stop and consider that God is right there with us when the bad things happen, we can remove the pressure of thinking we are personally responsible to combat them alone.

Our Church Meetings

In response to all He has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good.

Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of His coming back again is drawing near.

Overcome Evil

The barbed wire fence in my neighborhood is there to keep some things in–and some things out.

Either way, the sharp points on the twisted metal are harmful if contact is made with them.

I noticed that a vine had grown, making its way on the horizontal fence, gently moving past the painfully pointed ends.

The delicate and persistent vine had overcome the danger of the protruding barbs.

There are many “fences” encountered in life.

The Bible has this to say in Romans 12:21:

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Let Us Be Concerned

Today a friend came over and allowed me borrow something I needed.

People are always showing concern for me.

People help me.

People show me love.

I held the door open for a woman who was exiting a store right behind me this afternoon.

She said, “Why, thank you, Sugar Bear!”

I had to smile.

I suppose a day doesn’t go by that someone is not good to me.

Knowing all of this, I should be concerned for others.

I should help other people when I can.

I need to show love to them, too.

I need to do good things for other people.

It should become a way of life.

It was the way Jesus lived, wasn’t it?

Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.

—Hebrews 10:24

The Lord is Good

What does it mean to depend on God?

To trust Him in every area of my life?

What does it mean to trust His goodness?

How can I search for Him throughout all of my day?

The Lord is good to those who depend on Him,
to those who search for Him.

—Lamentations 3:25

Turn From Evil

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.—Psalm 34:14

Turn– to change direction

Evil–that which is sinful and wicked

Good–that which is morally right

Peace–the state of quiet and tranquility

What am I doing today?

What am I seeking?

What am I pursuing?
