Wind and Waves

I listened to a sermon this evening about Jesus calming the wind and waves.

Recently, I heard a song that spoke of how the wind and waves “still know His Name.”

Jesus can control every storm.

Nothing is too difficult for Him.

Dangerous is a word that applies to what could harm us.

There is nothing dangerous to Jesus…

One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out.  As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.

The disciples went and woke Him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm.  Then He asked them, “Where is your faith?”

The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When He gives a command, even the wind and waves obey Him!”

—Luke 8:22-25

I Will Give You Rest

I have a favorite scenic place about a thirty minute drive from my home.

Serene and lovely, the still waters beckon me to be calm, as well.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

—Matthew 11:28

Our hearts will forever be in a state of unease and confusion until we open them to Jesus.

When we do, He will give us rest.

Well-Watered Garden

The LORD will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

–Isaiah 58:11

There is a neighborhood that I have passed on the way to a large city that always catches my eye.

I don’t think I could ever just drive by without looking at the entrance, admiring the peaceful calm of the water and the fountain surrounded by beautiful plants.

There’s something about a vibrant garden scene that draws me into it.

A garden must have water to grow and flourish.

Without it, the lush emerald leaves would wither and die.

No colorful blooms would grace a carpet of green grass.

God gives us guidance, strength and hope.

Those who trust in Him are like a well-watered garden.

Others are drawn to them and the peace they exhibit from their hearts.

How would you describe your life today?

Is it a well-watered garden—peaceful, calm and beautiful?

He Heard Me

Walking with my friends in the garden, I came upon a beautiful camellia flower blooming.

Still cradling water droplets from the recent rain, its delicate, pink petals were layered in elegant, star-like formation.

There’s something curative and calming about strolling through a garden, pausing to appreciate the artistry that God has created in every design.

Fears and anxieties begin to ebb as we view each new expanse of beauty.

Psalm 34:4 reads,

“I sought the LORD and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

What better place to pray than in the quiet solitude of a garden of flowers?

Worries

Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

—1 Peter 5:7

Worry is a powerful force.

Worry can occupy your mind, stealing the space of wisdom and productive thought.

Worry can drive you to the corner and sit you there, removing you from meaningful activities.

Worry can stress your body, slowly robbing you of good health and fitness.

Worry can influence your attitude, coloring your choices with counterfeit hues.

Worry, in short, can take over your life–

if your let it.

What can battle such a controlling influence?

Not us.

Only God.

The difficult circumstances that worry hopes to feed upon must be brought to Him.

God cares for us and He is willing to give us His peace, exchanging worry for calm.

Perfect Peace

While visiting the ocean recently, I photographed two pelicans.

Often seen silently gliding in the air above in group formation, they are sometimes seen just sitting in the water, floating.

As I watched them, large waves would come up.

At times, they were completely hidden from my view because of the raging water and its foam.

Seconds later, they would appear in view again, still calmly riding the waves as though nothing had happened.

I know, of course, that at any moment they could’ve decided to just take off and fly away.

For a very long time, though, they chose not to.

They remained anchored in the water, moving as it moved, back and forth, high and low.

I can imagine them saying, “Let’s just sit here in the water for awhile and rest.”

Rest?

Rest in the constant surge of water beneath them?

Rest in the ocean’s white foam?

Evidently so.

They seemed at peace as they trusted their Maker.

The Bible tells us in Isaiah 26:3-4 that God can give perfect peace to those who trust Him:

You, Lord, give perfect peace
to those who keep their purpose firm
and put their trust in You.
 Trust in the Lord forever;
    He will always protect us.

The waves in our lives can we great, yet God can give us peace…

even in their midst.

Peacemakers

Do you know someone who seems to bring an atmosphere of peace and calm when they enter a room?

When they leave the room, do the seeds of peacefulness sprout and grow, even in their absence?

A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.

Only In God

Only in God do I find rest;
    my salvation comes from Him.

–Psalm 62:1

A white rocking chair sits near the old hotel, carefully placed by a stone wall surrounding part of the property.

The small flowers growing beside it add a quiet touch of pink to the scene.

Even though the setting is inviting, it cannot create a peaceful heart in someone sitting there.

The inner awareness that God loves us tremendously brings our souls to experience calm in that deep place within us where His Spirit abides.

Whether we are sitting in a rocking chair by a stone wall or an airplane seat thousands of feet high, we can know God’s peace.
