We Are Made Right

Driving along the highway, I approached a drawbridge that was raised.

The red stop lights were on, so any car that approached had to come to a halt.

Some type of boat was surely making a safe passage under the raised bridge.

Unless the obstruction of steel and concrete could be moved, the boat would not be able to pass to the other side.

Jesus did something for us when He died on the cross.

He made it possible for the obstruction of sin to be removed.

Our sin created a barrier between us and a safe passage to Heaven when we die.

The Bible says that all have sinned.

When Jesus took on that sin for us, He then lifted the penalty for it.

With the penalty of sin taken away, there is now an open passage for those who accept Him as their Savior.

Romans 3:21-24

But now God has shown us a way to be made right with Him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Provenance.

Until about a month ago, I didn’t know the meaning of the word.

After having heard it for the first time, I looked it up in a dictionary.

Provenance, defined, means the origin or source of something or its history of ownership.

I have no conscious memory of being born.

The recollection of the first months of my life seems unattainable.

I have very clear memories of my second year, although they are only a few in number.

By three years old?

I remember a lot.

Of course, my capacity to recollect increased considerably after that.

My origin?

Who really claims ownership over me?

I learned that much later.

God created me and gave me life.

It is He who truly owns me.

There came a point as I matured where I understood more than this.

I understood that I was a sinner—as all are—and I was in need of forgiveness from God.

Jesus died on the cross, paying the penalty for all my sin, so that I could receive this redemption.

Believing this, I repented and asked God to forgive me.

At that very moment, a new point of personal origin came into being.

My new life as a Christian began.

Provenance.

Knowing Jesus gives the word a whole new meaning…

Blessed is the Man

He was all alone on the boardwalk.

Just a single black bird, visible through the opening in the deck rails.

The lake below him, the blue sky above him, and a couple of trees growing nearby.

No other birds.

Just him.

Psalm 1:1-3 reads,

“Blessed is the man
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.”

Sometimes, in order to keep from walking in the counsel of the wicked, we have to choose to walk alone.

Sometimes, in order to keep from hanging around people who indulge in sinning, we have to choose to be alone.

Sometimes, in order to keep from being with people who enjoy scoffing at others, we have to choose to be alone.

Even if we are alone, we can be blessed by God.

We can think about what God would want in our lives.

We can pray day and night and He will always hear us.

Pleasing God is what’s important, even if it means we are far away from the crowd.

I’m on the Right Way

I am grateful to God for placing my feet on the right path many years ago.

Just having turned 19 years of age, I was weary and worn from making my own decisions.

Coming to the place where I realized that I needed to invite Jesus to be the Lord of my life, I repented of my sin and asked for  forgiveness.

Since that time, my feet have been on the right path.

I’ve fallen a few times.

Actually, more than a few.

But I fell while on the right path that God placed me on, and I stood up each time to continue on with His help, continuing on that right path.

In a way that I cannot explain, this path “glows.”

I am drawn to remain there.

It is the only choice, as God holds my hand through the events of each day.

Through the Strong Currents

Standing near the shoreline, I happened to notice a draw bridge opening up above the water.

I watched as a boat made its way through.

It’s quite an undertaking to design, construct and operate a draw bridge.

From the very beginning, the purpose of the draw bridge is to open up a passageway for boats so that they can go through.

Because the bridge was so big and so low, I might have mistakenly thought that the boat would not have been able to get to the other side.

There may be things in our lives that look like that bridge to us.

Illness.

Relationship issues.

Job concerns.

They seem way too big to allow us to pass through to a better place.

It is God, however, who controls the bridge.

At His command, the heavy mass of steel and concrete situations can lift, just in time for us to pass through safely.

We must trust God every day.

Even when the obstacles seem too big.

 

 

 

 

The Lord makes a path through the sea
    and a road through the strong currents.
