So He Ran Ahead

He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, because He was going to pass that way.

—Luke 19:1-4

Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus in the crowd.

For some reason, maybe because he was a short man, he gave up on trying to see him in the place that he was. He decided to run ahead of Jesus.

He found a sycamore tree that would be in the path Jesus would take.

So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to walk that way. Zacchaeus climbed the tree so he would be able to see Jesus when He passed by.

When Jesus came near the tree, He called to Zacchaeus and told him He would be going to his house!

I believe that Jesus knew Zacchaeus was desperately trying to see Him when he was still in the crowd.

Jesus could have called to him then.

He did not.

Jesus called to him, instead, after he ran.

After he climbed.

After he waited.

Spiritually speaking, am I running, climbing and waiting just to see Jesus?

  1. Saint Patrick says:

Beautifully explained. I have to run, climb, and wait for Jesus. I wait for the comforting guidance of the Holy Spirit, to lead me to my next chapter of my life.
