What Some of You Were

Have you ever known someone who was:

addicted to drugs?

an alcoholic?

addicted to pornography?

a compulsive gambler?

aggressively angry?

a thief?

habitually dishonest?

disloyal to their spouse?

a negligent parent?

untrustworthy?

If you are like me, I can look back over my life and probably think of someone in every category.

The 6th chapter in 1 Corinthians speaks of a lot of things that are sinful, meaning they are displeasing to God.

Though perhaps not directly mentioned in the scriptures, the common issues listed above could certainly be in the category of being displeasing to God.

Then, again, the list above could be lengthened a great deal just by considering the ways that you or I might have displeased God, even during a short period.

The fact is, we are all human and we fail.

We fall short of what God wants for us, time and again.

Going back to 1 Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 11 reads,

“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Whatever we could come up with to label ourselves or others by our sinfulness, those labels do not have to continue to apply.

Those labels are about what we were.

Now, we can be washed.

Sanctified.

Justified.

Because of Jesus and His sacrifice for our sins.

Let me ask you:

Have you ever known someone who was:

forgiven?
