Just As He Walked

One of my favorite songs speaks about getting closer to God and looking more like Him.

Here are some of the lyrics:

LIKE A CHILD WALKING IN THEIR FATHER’S SHOES
I JUST WANNA LOOK A LITTLE MORE LIKE YOU
EVERY DAY’S ANOTHER STEP FORWARD
I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER

Late this afternoon, I made a trip to the grocery store.
As I pushed my cart into the check out line, a young man working for the store asked me if he could unload my cart for me and place my items on the line.
When the purchasing process was over, he had everything in the cart again for me.
Next, he pushed my cart as I walked along beside him all the way out to my car in the parking lot.
He was incredibly respectful.
He inquired about my day, so I told him a bit about how it had been.
In turn, I asked him if he was a student at the local high school.
He told me that he had been, but that he was now in college.
“Do you have a major yet?” I asked.
His answer was a normal one, but the last four words resounded in my mind in bold thought.
He said he was getting a criminal justice degree and that he was going to become a policeman and work for “OPD” (a nearby department) “just like my dad.”

Thanking him for his help, we said goodbye to each other.

I drove away comparing what he had just said to the lyrics of the song that I like so much.

This young man was training with intent.

He knew what he wanted, and he was setting his course in order to reach that goal.

The crown of that goal was to be just like his dad.

“Like a child walking in their father’s shoes, I just wanna look a little more like you….”

What is my goal in life, really?

What is my goal for today?

And tomorrow?

Is it to be a little more like God?

Every day, changing and getting closer to Him?

If someone asks me about my goals, would I tell them that I just want to be more like Jesus?

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
