Only What is Helpful

It was quiet as I walked by the small grove.

Looking up, I saw a mockingbird sitting silently in the branch of an orange tree.

For some reason, he wasn’t in the mood for talking.

It seems like when I notice them most is when they are.

Since they “mock” other birds’ calls, it’s a little bit hard for me to recognize that I am hearing a mockingbird.

They will repeat what one bird might say for a few seconds, then switch to the voice of another completely different bird.

I wonder if a mockingbird has a call that is all its own, other than just saying what it has heard?

As humans, we each have a voice.

We can choose to use it wisely…..or not.

We can choose to use it to be kind.

To be encouraging.

To be helpful.

To build worth in other people.

We can also choose to just say things we’ve heard others say, without giving attention to what effect our words may have on those who hear them.

We each have a voice—a voice God has given us.

How does He want us to use it?

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

—Ephesians 4:29
