It Bites Like a Snake

Well, you see, there was this snake….

It really wasn’t bothering anyone, sitting there in the grass and mulch.

My friend decided to pick it up.

And what happened next?

At some point, the snake, feeling rightfully provoked, I’m sure, decided to bite my friend on the hand.

The result?

Teeth marks and blood.

It was a non-poisonous snake, but it bit, nonetheless.

The snake was just being what it was–a snake.

If it had not been picked up, it may not have bitten anyone.

So many things are like that in life.

Think of it—

The thousands of people who wouldn’t have died of lung cancer if they had just never picked up that first cigarette.

The incredible number of traffic accidents that wouldn’t have happened if the drivers had never taken that first drink before putting the key into the ignition.

The heartbreaking list of children left as orphans because of a parent’s overdose of drugs—how things would be different if only those parents had never chosen to try them, even once.

Choosing to let certain things alone is a wisdom that escapes many, yet it is a prize to possess.

Proverbs 23:29-35 reads,

Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
    when it goes down smoothly!
In the end it bites like a snake
    and poisons like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
“They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

When woe, sorrow and strife call to us in any form, we would be wise to leave it alone.
