Word or Deed

Someone at work brought a flower to me today.

It was an unexpected kindness that made a smile come to my face.

Later in the afternoon, a friend dropped by my home with a much needed gift of office equipment.

Through the loving attitude of both people, my life was blessed.

Jesus wants us to be loving and giving.

What could you do tomorrow to bless someone else’s life?

What could I do?

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

—Colossians 3:17

The Fire Will Test

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.  If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,  his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.  If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.  If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

–1 Corinthians 3:11-15

If I think about today, the past week, or the past month—-what things have I done or said that would be considered gold, silver or costly stones?

What about all I’ve said or done that would come under the category of wood, hay or straw?

Let’s see: conversations with people about God–that’s probably under the gold category.

How about praying for someone to come to know Jesus as their Savior? Gold again.

And then there’s the insensitive words I have spoken—those would fit best under wood and hay.

Does everything we do have to be categorized?

It’s just that God is letting us know that there are things we say and do that really honor Him and there are those

other things that we do and say that don’t.

I really do want to fill my life story with things that God would be pleased with.

When the heavenly fire tests the quality of my work on this earth, I want it to be pleasing to God so it will remain and not be burned up.

We can’t go back and change how we have chosen to live in the past.

We can, however, decide if our "today" will be filled with words and actions that please God.

Will today be a "gold, silver and precious stones" day for you?

Trust

I have a friend who does volunteer work with therapy horses.

Intrigued by this notion, I have actually considered accompanying her sometime to see and experience how horses help people.

Recently, my friend and I were walking down a country road unfamiliar to both of us.

We saw a couple of horses in a fenced area.

They immediately began to walk toward us.

I have read about horses being able to sense how people are feeling.

They decide which humans to trust.

Both horses that day must have found us trustworthy.

They allowed us to pet them, and even photograph them.

If they had not walked over to us, they wouldn’t have known that we could be trusted.

Many people don’t really know that they can trust God.

Staying at a distance, they are afraid to find out.

Those who seek Him realize that He can be trusted and that there is much comfort in doing so.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

–Psalm 37:3

Dwelling Place

Traffic was heavy, I suppose.

Heading home after a full day of work, I was sitting in stopped traffic on a two lane, one way street running through an older area of a nearby town.

The street runs past two story homes that were built decades ago, each with a silent narrative all their own.

Being the first day of February, there are plants and trees blooming here in the sub tropical zone.

As I sat still, looking at my surroundings, I noticed a blazingly yellow tree just ahead of my car.

Such beauty, calling out in color.

I could have completely missed it if I had not been stopped still in traffic.

Everywhere we look, God is there.

The work of His hands–all creation–speaks of His presence with us.

The psalmist writes, "How lovely is your dwelling place,
    O Lord Almighty!"  (Psalm 84:1)

Although this passage speaks of a place of worship, I think it is true also of our world and its beauty.

God dwells with us, showing us the magnificence of all that exists.

The LORD Will Teach

Tonight was a quiet evening with a chill in the air.

I was wearing a coat while eating at an outdoor area of a lakeside restaurant.

The sun was setting with a blaze of color on the clouds.

Very close by, the railroad track lay ready at any moment for a train to roll its many tons over it.

Trains, boats, cars, airplanes–they all take us where we choose to go.

But what destinations do we choose?

Do we really know the right ones?

If we know God, He will teach us the way.

Who, then, is this person that fears the Lord?
He is the one whom the Lord will teach which path to choose.

—Psalm 25:12
