Bore Our Sins

It’s an old song.

As I was cleaning house today, I was listening to a CD of piano music. The song, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" came on. My eyes became teary as I realized something for the first time.

For two and a half years, I lived across the street from my grandmother. I moved there when I was in the second grade; she died in January of my 4th grade year.

She would sit in her living room and play a very small electric keyboard. It was a "Magnus Organ." I could hear her playing from across the street. She would play, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Many things had not gone well in her life. Living in poverty for most of her days, she was going blind and had lost many, if not all, her teeth. She had divorced as a young woman and never remarried. Things had been hard, yet she still played the familiar hymn.

So, why did I feel so emotional? I realized that the words of the song had continued to live in my mind, even though she was gone. It was as if she was sending me a message through those lyrics back then when I was a little girl. I would remember the message throughout my life. It would return to me many times, just like today:

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.

    What a treasure she was and still is to you. Praise God for His workers. Oh that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. Amen.

    Excellent photo and wonderful story. That was one of the first hymns I learned to play on the piano many years ago.

    I’ve been praying about something. That’s not unusual. Many people pray. For me, though, this is special. I have been praying about a matter for about 15 months now.
