Grain and New Wine

Years ago, I was a member of a large congregation in the town where I had graduated from college. The pastor was a very compassionate man, full of the desire to please God in teaching and shepherding those of his "flock." Thinking back, I learned a lot through the many experiences I had there.

One memory comes to mind this evening—-the blessing. I don’t remember them exactly, yet I know this was the pastor’s custom.  At the end of a service, he would speak a blessing over those in the sanctuary. It was special, every time. I believe God heard each word spoken over us.

What blessing might we give to someone else today?

This is an art that our society has lost. It was HUGE in the Old Testament…to pronounce blessings. It was a weekly ritual in all Jewish households for the paretns to pronounce blessings upon their sons and daughters every Sabboth. Too we don’t realize how simple negative words are curses and how powerful it is…and how powerful to speak blessings upon others. The power of life and death!
